EThekwini ANC Refutes Mayor's Bribe Allegations

BY BONGANI GINA

The ANC in eThekwini Region has shielded its Regional Chairperson Zandile Gumede, who is also the eThekwini Metro Mayor, on allegations of demanding and receiving a bribe.

This follows allegations by the Durban businessman Calvin Mathibeli who alleges that he gave Gumede an amount of R100 000 and that she demanded R150 000 more as he was receiving jobs from the Municipality.

In a media briefing held in Durban on Wednesday, Party's Regional Secretary Bheki Ntuli came out in support of Gumede, saying that the allegations are not true and have no base.

"The REC rejects in the strongest terms allegations levelled by Calvin Mathibeli in the social media and in the Sunday Tribune, we want to put it on record that the ANC in eThekwini region hadno agreement with him and we atherefore distance ourselves from characters like him. "We are encouraged that Mayor Zandile Gumede is also considering taking legal action against him following his frivolous allegations,"" says Ntuli.

Mathibeli has since posted evidence on the form of email correspondents between himself and ANC as well as eThekwini officials. In the emails he is asked to buy and brand t-shirts for the ANC and lot other favors are asked from him.

Gumede says these are just baseless allegations against her from those who are against women leaders, "I am a good servant of the ANC, and I represent and work for the poor people as the ANC has mandated me to do so, and I champion radical economic transformation at the municipality and these people are against that,"she says.

She adds that she has also opened a case against Mathibeli.
