Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe has promised harsh action against mining companty Sibanye Stillwater if it is found to have flouted any rules.

Mantashe's comment follows the death of four mineworkers in Sibanye's Kloof mine near Westonaria in Gauteng on Monday.

A fifth miner is still missing.

Mantashe visited the mine last night where he spoke to management and unions.

He says stemming the deaths in the mining sector is the biggest challenge for the industry at present.

" My own observation is that there is a big challenge for us to stop this Kloof/Driefontein rif from being a killing field of the mining industy. Many things will have to be done right. In our engagement we'll apply the rules of that law interms of what ever section of law that needs to apply to be hard on the transgressions."says Mantashe.
